 County Training Programme – Selection

8U

Individual Coaches and / or Tennis Sussex are to nominate players R2 or below who may have the ability to be part of the County Squad by the close of Sussex County Championships in September. These players will be invited to attend a “Tennis Sussex Open Day” where the lead coach of the 8U team alongside other coaches associated with County Training at Mini Tennis level will be present to assess the suitability of the players to be part of the Squad.   Depending on numbers at any given time all players with a Red 1 rating or higher will automatically be invited to County Training. In the event of the number of player’s Red 1 or higher being greater than 16, then Tennis Sussex reserve the right to ask all or some players to attend some form of selection process. The squad be reviewed in March and if spaces allow and if required, new players will be added to the squad for April – July

9U

Individual Coaches and / or Tennis Sussex are to nominate players O2 or below who may have the ability to be part of the County Squad by the close of Sussex County Championships in September. These players will be invited to attend a “Tennis Sussex Open Day” where the lead coach of the 9U team alongside other coaches associated with County Training at Mini Tennis level will be present to assess the suitability of the players to be part of the Squad. Players rated 01 and O1*, or who have strong competition results over the summer or represented Sussex in the County Cup team will be automatically selected directly into the County Training Squad for the year. The squad will be periodically reviewed and if spaces allow and if required, new players will be added to the squad.

10U

Individual Coaches and / or Tennis Sussex are to nominate players G2 or below who may have the ability to be part of the County Squad by the close of Sussex County Championships in September. These players will be invited to attend a “Tennis Sussex Open Day” where the lead coach of the 10U team alongside other coaches associated with County Training at Mini Tennis level will be present to assess the suitability of the players to be part of the Squad. Players rated G1 and G1*, or who have strong competition results over the summer or represented Sussex in the County Cup team will be automatically selected directly into the County Training Squad for the year. The squad will be periodically reviewed and if spaces allow and if required, new players will be added to the squad.

11U & 12U

Individual Coaches and / or Tennis Sussex are to nominate players who may have the ability to be part of the County Squad by the close of Sussex County Championships in September. These players will be invited to attend a “Tennis Sussex Open Day” where the lead coach alongside other coaches associated with County Training will be present to assess the suitability of the players to be part of the Squad. Players rated G1 and G1*, or who have strong competition results over the summer or represented Sussex in the County Cup team will be automatically selected directly into the County Training Squad for the year. The squad will be periodically reviewed and if spaces allow and if required, new players will be added to the squad.

14U – 18U

All players ranked inside the top 16 players in Sussex for their YOB age group will be nominated to be considered by the selection panel. Rankings will be taken from the LTA rankings run at the end of the 1st week in September.

 County Training Programme – Selection Criteria

A selection panel consisting of the County Age-Group Captain and County Performance officer will then make the final selection based on the following:

8U 9U 10U

All players will be selected by the panel based on a mixture of the following factors:

  • Mini Tennis Rating (Orange/Green only)
  • Level of involvement within LTA Player Pathway (National, Regional, County)
  • Performance in preceding County events/other external tournaments
  • Performance at County Open Day if applicable
  • Attitude

11U 12U 14U 16U 18U

The top 6 players (top 8 boys and girls for 18U), based on their ranking after the first ranking run in September, will be awarded a direct County Training Squad place. The next 6 (4) players will be selected by the panel based on a combination of the following factors:

  • Player ranking
  • Player rating
  • Level of involvement within LTA Player Pathway (National, Regional, County)
  • Performance in preceding County events/other external tournaments.
  • Attitude
  • Commitment to a regular training programme

Players selected will receive an invite from the Tennis Sussex Team providing them with information of the training dates, times, venue and payment process. Players will be expected to pay a subsidised rate of £13 per 2hr County Training Squads to help cover some of the costs of coaches and court fees.

 County Cup & other Team Events – Selection

Players selected for County Training (or Regional / National training) in 8U, 9U, 10U, 11U, 12U, 14U, 16U & 18U age groups will automatically be in contention for the County Cup and any other County team events.
