In December 2018 Downs View Link College and Life Skills College in partnership with Preston Lawn Tennis Club, Brighton, opened a café based in the club house.
The café is run by the students, who all have severe learning disabilities, and supported by Downs View staff. The students make a range of cakes at the college and then on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Friday mornings serve the tennis players and guests, teas, coffees and delicious cakes.
This is a fantastic partnership as the students gain café related work experience skills in a supportive environment and the tennis players get a well-earned drink and a slice of homemade cake! There has been some very good feedback from both parents and learners. Additionally, one of the learners will start volunteering on the weekends, such is his great improvement in confidence and independence skills!
Additionally, last summer Preston Tennis Club ran a series of tennis coaching sessions for a group of the Downs View students.
