Tennis Sussex Awards – 2nd February 2020. Get voting. Winning means so much to people. This is what Club of Year 2019 Slinfold Tennis Club thought when they won. Winning the Sussex tennis Club of the Year award represented the greatest achievement in the Club’s history. For a small village club even to be recognised alongside nominees such as Pavilion & Avenue, Angmering and West Worthing felt like a considerable success so to be announced as winners really came as a very pleasant surprise.
Obviously winning an award liken this reflects on a huge amount of work over a period of time and requires a commitment from all stakeholders. The construction of a new purpose built clubhouse and patio, resurfacing of our three courts to an artificial clay surface and the refurbishment of fencing and floodlights needed the support of a dedicated committee, the patience of our membership and a strong relationship with our local Parish council.
We remain at heart a village club, providing an excellent environment both on and off the courts, that aims to provide reasonably priced access to the sport for players of all levels with a particular emphasis on social tennis encouraging new starters, returners to the game and established players all to spend as much time on the courts as possible. The publicity we were able to generate after winning the award has also helped attract new players to the club improving the quantity and quality of both social and team play. The club will continue to develop as we look to meet the demands of the community either by adding an additional court or perhaps providing a Padel facility in the years to come however whatever happens in the future we will look back at our period as Club of the year with great pride.
