The Sussex County Championships 2024

The Sussex County Championship’s in Association with Bede’s School

What a fantastic week of Sussex Tennis, where we saw juniors and adults battle it out on court at Southdown Sports Club. Thankfully we had an amazing sunny week of weather which saw all 293 players hit the courts. Southdown Sports Club have been hosting this event for over 50 years!!

This year we had over 500 entries and 633 matches were played over 8 days. We saw Lola Lavandera seeded 7th take home the Women’s Open Singles title, Henry Hughes who was seeded 5th took the Men’s Open Single Trophy and special mention to Katherine Rennie who knocked out the Number 1 and 2 seed to claim the 16U Girls Singles title. The 12U Singles Winners, Hugo and Pippa will now get invited to take part in the Babolat Cup in September at the prestigious Edgbaston Priory Club, Birmingham.

The Family Cup was back for another year, which is always a popular event. This year Jared Leach and his nephew luca were the winners, thankyou to everyone who took part. We held the Singles Wheelchair event at Southdown this year, congratulations to Adrian Gilchrist who won and runner-up Adam Turner.

Phil Latham said this about the County Championships: It was a great week of Tennis in often hot and sunny conditions. It’s always nice to see some of the players playing the Open and Seniors events having played the championships as a Junior, and is what makes the Championships that little bit extra special. Big thanks to Bedes School for partnering with us for the County Championships and thank you to Southdown Sports Club for hosting another successful County Champs. We would also like to say a big thank you to all officials and volunteers that have helped us during the week.
