In the Ladies League Division 5E its been a story of two clubs. Southdown and Virgin Active. Southdown have had a strong season with Susan Carpenter, Marianne Bole and Catherine Jackson winning the majority of their games but It looks like 19 points will not be enough to hold off Virgin Active who with one match to play are just a point behind. Using a large squad of players Ana Gimenez, Jo Whatley and Jane Healy have all achieved maximum points. In fact most of their squad have hardly dropped a set all season winning their matches 4 – 0.
There is a similar story in Division 5W where Storrington and Comptons are battling it out to win their Division. Comptons are one point ahead and only need to draw but the match is on the home turf of the Storrington Third team who could help out their Second team big time . Beautifully balanced then. Comptons have 16 players in their squad so team selection could be crucial in this vital match.
Its tight as well in Division 6E. The Weald and East Hoatley are battling it out for the top slot but the Amherst Ladies, although 3 points behind have two games in hand against the two lower clubs – Saltdean and East Grinstead. Hopefully this weather does not play a part in the schedule. Interesting that there are 16 ladies in the Amherst squad and only 6 in the Weald. Will it be variety or consistency that wins the day.
Points in hand or games to play is the issue in Division 6W. Billingshurst have the points. All 17 of them but 4 points behind are Steyning who will play Chichester and Wickwoods. This season Emily Sheehan and Olivia Falkner have been the stand out stars for Billinghurst having a 100% record and not dropping a set. For Steyning its been Linda Lamont and Liz Munro who have been the driving force for the small West Sussex Club.
In the Men’s Divisions Maresfield have been having a remarkable season and it seems as though the Ladies are going to achieve a similar outcome in Division 7E. Although not all the matches have been played they can not be caught. So Maresfield will win this Division due to the efforts of Biddy Pilling, Carol Sturt and Sharon Critchley.
In Division 7W, Howard Ladies have one match away to David Lloyd to overtake Crawley. Middleton made a late charge actually beating Howard Ladies 3 – 1 but its now in Howard’s hands as it were. Julie Hoare, Sarah Bullough and Helen Owen will need to keep their nerve.
Nicely poised in Division 8E where David Lloyd and Wadhurst are separated by just one point. Wadhurst will play Preston at home and David Lloyd must play on the clay against Pav & Ave. Both teams have utilised squads of 16 players and more which is a good indication of the demand for more competitions
Division 8W has been dominated by Bognor who have dropped just one rubber all season. Angmering and West Worthing have had an excellent season but Stella Smith, Maree Loversidge and Jenny Loversidge together with Louise West have been far too strong for other players in that Division.
