Wilson Sandford Winter Doubles League – Lower Divisions 8 – 11 East and West

These may be the lower divisions in the Wilson Sandford Winter Doubles League but the competition for promotion is just as keen as in the higher divisions.

In the last two articles we have looked at the top and middle divisions and now it is the time for Divisions 8 through to Division 11 in West Sussex. There is no Division 11 in the eastern part of the County.

In Division 8E it looks to be a three way tussle between the Seaford 4th team, the Pavilion & Avenue 2nd team and the Badgers second team. At one stage it looked as though Pav & Ave were going to run away with it gaining maximum points after two matches but that situation has recently changed with Badgers gaining the upper hand in the match between the  two clubs.

The situation is similar in Division 8 West where two points separate three clubs – West Worthing 4th Team – Wickwoods 5th team and Crawley 3rd team. And although West Worthing are top its the Crawley men who have a game in hand. Leon Martin and Chris Keating have barely dropped a set as from the date of this article have a 100% record.

In Division 9 East it is the Pav & Ave third team who are winning all before them. As although the Southdown 5th team are leading having won all three matches 3 – 1. The Pav & Ave third team have not dropped a set and have a game in hand. Can they maintain that form through to the end?

In the West equivalent of Division 9 the Rudgewick First team are top of the pile with 15 points. They have won all their matches convincingly except against West Chiltington when they lost two matches in CTB’s. Maybe just a blip?

In Division 10E the Withdean Team and presumably their only Men’s team are having a ding dong with Cooden Beach third team and the Weald Sixth team. Here is a typical division whereby the larger clubs are able to compete in the lower divisions and presumably giving opportunities to younger or even much older players and keen enthusiasts to play competitive tennis by fielding a number of sides.

Once again Division 10West is just as competitive with Hurstpierpoint Third team and Comptons Third Team jostling for promotion. Although Billingshurst Men’s second team with a game in hand will have something to say though for the automatic promotion slot.

In Division 11West Middleton third team, Crawley 5th team and Barn’s Green are divided by one point although Crawley have the cushion of a match in hand.

The Ladies 8th Division East features four teams at the top slugging it out for promotion – David Lloyd in Eastbourne, Wadhurst, Lindfield Second Team and Pav & Ave Second Team. In terms of percentages the David Lloyd Ladies have the best win ratio very closely followed by the Pav & Ave ladies who also have a game in hand. As the saying goes – it will go down to the wire.

The Ladies 8th Division West is more clear cut. The Angmering third team are out in front but Bognor are close on their heels, again  with a game in hand.

The situation is similar in 9E. The Amherst third team lead the way but the Pav & Ave Third team are showing good form and lurk not far behind. Cross in Hand second team will rightly claim to have a say as well. Club tennis in sussex

9W is another roller coaster competitive division with West Chiltington, Angmering 5th team and Wickwoods 4th team are all in close contention to gain promotion. The smart money though may be on Wickwoods who are just one point behind but with a match in hand.

10E is the simplest division to report. The Weald sixth team are dominating winning every match 4 – 0. The only exception was their match against Mayfield Second team where they lost two rubbers.

In 10W it is a straight fight between  Hurstpierpoint and Middleton second teams who are neck and neck. But what is interesting about this division is that Storrington are fielding two ladies’ teams which underlines the appetite for competitive matches in Sussex.

Finally in Division 11W two points separates four teams – Middleton third team, Billingshurst third team, Steyning and Crawley third teams.
